Father’s Day is celebrated at different times in different places of the world. It complements Mother’s Day but honors fathers. It was inaugurated in the early twentieth century in Fairmont, West Virginia, USA. The first Father’s Day is believed to have been held on 5 June 1908. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate Father’s Day after a deadly mine explosion in nearby Monongah the prior December. Many of the 361 people who died were fathers as well as recent immigrants to the USA from Italy. The holiday was not made an official holiday in the United States until 1976. People usually spend about 40% less on Father’s Day gifts than Mother’s Day gifts.
