新年
xīnnián

New Year’s Day is the 1st of January, but celebrations start the night before. It is popular for people to go out to pubs, clubs or parties on the 31st of December and count down the seconds until Midnight, before setting off fireworks and singing Auld Lang Syne. In New York, a ball drops in Times Square to mark the new year. In Britain, people will pay a visit to their relatives and friends and enjoy wine and desserts with them. They usually leave before the midnight and step into their relative's or friend's house without knocking the door. It is said that the good luck in the near year comes to the first person who entered the house after the midnight. In France, the celebration is all about drinking, usually starting from New Year Eve and not ending until January 3rd. In Germany, people are standing on the chairs and jumping off to the ground just when bells of churches start ringing loudly at the midnight, which indicates ringing out the old year and ringing in the new year.
