start, begin 和 commence 在语意上很相近,不过 commence 更为正式,通常不用于日常会话。The meeting is ready to begin/start… He tore the list up and started/began a new one… the new school term commences in September… 注意, start, begin 和 commence 后面都可以跟名词或动词的 -ing 形式,但是,只有 start 和 begin 后面能够跟带 ‘to’ 的动词不定式。可以说 It’s starting/beginning to rain., 但不能说 ‘It’s commencing to rain.’
