月下老人 "月下老人[yuèxiàlǎorén]" means matchmaker
The Story: A scholar named Wei Gu once went to an arranged meeting in hopes of finding a mate. Near a temple in that area he saw an old man sitting on the step and reading a book in the moonlight. First he asked him what book he was reading (it was about marriage), and then he asked what was in the bag beside him. The old man replied that there was a red thread used to tie the feet of couples. This sparked Wei's curiosity, as he then proceeded to ask him if he could tell him where his wife was. With certainty, he said, "Your wife is the daughter of a vegetable-selling grandma." Right when he said this here came that vegetable-selling grandma coming over with a baby in her arms. The old man said, "These two are your mother-in-law and wife." This disgusted Wei, who blamed him for his nonsense and called him a mad man. The old man just smiled. Later on, Wei was promoted to a high position and ended up marrying a woman who was seventeen years old. When he asked her where she came from, she said that she was born in a proper family yet for some reason she was left in the care of a grandma who was disabled. That was when Wei knew. The old man was a true matchmaker; he was correct.
