这两个词都有采取行动使之不受损害的意思。前者更具体，后者更正式，一般用于比较重大的抽象事物。“保护”可说“受……保护”，“维护”则不能。
Both verbs mean “to take protective action or safeguard." The former is more concrete; the latter can be applied to more important abstract things and is more formal. One can say: "受……保护," but 维护 cannot be used in this way.
1.保护
（1）在努力学习的同时，也应该要注意保护自己的视力。
（2）事故发生后，要好好保护现场。
2.维护
多用于抽象意义。
维护 is usually used in an abstract sense.
（1）各国都有维护国际和平的义务。
（2）我们要维护法律的尊严。
“维护”还表示维持现有的状态，使之继续存在下去。
维护 also means "to withhold an existing state."
（3）维护社会的正常秩序是公安部门的职能。
有时，既具体又抽象的事物（如“权利”、“权益”、“利益”等），“保护”、“维护”都可以用。
Sometimes, for things that can be both abstract and concrete, either 保护 or 维护 can be used.
（4）每个公民都应该保护（维护）自己的合法权益。
