In Yuan dynasty, in addition to the neighborhood of the capital, which is directly under the secretariat, 11 executive secretariats are setup in Henan, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, Hunan and Guangxi province, Shanxi, Liaoning, Gansu, north of Shanxi region, Yunan and etc., abbr. As 十一行省, which are responsible for the local government affairs. Therefore, it gradually became the name of the local supreme administrative division. Lately, the name was handed down on and used, and further abbreviated as the province.
