- A plan of spelling pronunciation of Chinese mandarin and pronouncing Chinese characters that was passed on November 1, 1957 by the State Council and approved on February 11th, 1958 by the 5th Session of the first National People's Congress. The plan adopts 26 Latin letters with an alphabet, a table of initial consonants, a table of simple or compound vowels, tone symbols and syllable-dividing marks. It's an important tool to promote mandarin and the study of Chinese characters.
