汉语 vs. 中文
hànyǔ vs. zhōngwén
汉语means “the language of the Han nationality, i.e. Putonghua, the standard contemporary Chinese language.” 中文 means “the Chinese language and script of the Han nationality.”
(1) 他的汉语（中文）说得很好。
In this example, both words mean “the language of the Han nationality” and so are interchangeable. Learning the Chinese language also includes the written form.
(2) 我目前在学习现代汉语。
(3) 他是中文系毕业的。
中文系 is the customary name for the department of Chinese language and literature in a university. Here, 中文 and 汉语 cannot be interchanged.
“汉语”指汉族的语言，即现代汉语的标准语普通话。“中文”指中国的语言文字，有时也特指汉族的语言文字。
在此例中，两个词都指汉族语言，所以可以互换。“中文”包括“语言文字”中的“文字”，所以并不矛盾。
“中文系”是大学汉语言、文学系的习惯说法。因此两者不能换用。
