但是 vs. 可是 dànshì vs. kěshì
Both conjunctions indicate “transition." The preceding clause is usually begins with 虽然, 尽管, etc. and the following clause by 却, 仍然, 还, 也, etc. If the transition does not require emphasis, 虽然, etc. is not used. 可是 is more informal than 但是. (1) 他虽然不是很聪明,但是(可是)他很刻苦。 (2) 尽管下着雨,但是(可是)他还是来了。 (3) 比赛失败了,可是(但是)他觉得自己学到了很多东西。
If the following clause has a subject, 但是 must precede the subject, while 可是 may precede or follow it. (4) 虽然整天吊儿郎当,但是(可是)他从来没干过坏事。 (5) 虽然整天吊儿郎当,他可是从来没干过坏事。
但是 can connect two words or phrases of opposite meanings. (6) 他的眼睛小但是有神。
This way of expression is more formal, so 可是 is seldom used. Incidentally, 可是 sometimes is a phrase made up by 可plus 是, meaning “certainly is” or “really is”, which has nothing in common with但是.
