掩护 and 保护
yǎnhù and bǎohù
Both 掩护 and 保护 mean “to protect against harm,” but they are different in usage.
1. 掩护 means “to protect people or troops in secret by shielding.”
(1) 他们坚守阵地，有效掩护主力部队安全撤离。
2. 保护 can be open protection, or protection in secret.
(1) 在飞机的保护（掩护）下，连队安全抵达了总部。
(2) 在战争年代，许多群众都自觉自动掩护（保护）我军伤员。
In examples (1) and (2), 掩护 means “to protect in secret.”
The object of 保护 can be things as well as human beings when the objects are things, it cannot be replaced by 掩护.
(3) 当发生命案的时候，一定要注意保护现场。
(4) 公民的合法财产是受到法律保护的。
“掩护”和“保护”都有尽力护卫，使不受伤害的意思，但在用法上有所区别。
1.“掩护”主要指暗中采取遮掩的方式维护人员或部队的安全。
2.“保护”既可以是公开的，又可以是暗中的护卫。上例中，“掩护”特指用“掩盖”、“隐蔽”的方式使人员不受伤害。
“保护”的对象除了人以外，还可以是事物，这是不能用“掩护”。
