保持 and 维持

1. 保持 means "to keep a state or situation unchanged" and can take all sorts of nominal objects and disyllabic verbal and adjectival objects.
(1) 一直以来，他都保持着旺盛的创作激情。
(2) 虽然我们不在一个城市，但我们一直保持着联系。
(3) 请大家保持安静。
(4) 这里的建筑一直保持着独特的风格。
(5) 他总是能使自己的房间保持整洁。

2. Besides keeping something unchanged, 维持 also implies reluctance, passivity and something that must continue.
(1) 他们负责维持现场秩序。
(2) 这些食物只够我们维持两天。
(3) 他自己也不知道这段感情还有什么值得继续维持下去的。
(4) 他们一直保持（维持）着合作关系。

保持 is usually applied to a normal and effortless relationship, while 维持 is applied to a passive or reluctant relationship. 维持 also means to safeguard and support e.g. .暗中维持, 多方维持, etc.

1.“保持”有使状况、局面继续不变的意思。可带各种名词性宾语，也可带双音节动词、形容词宾语。
2.“维持”除了有使原有状况、局面不变的意思外，含有比较勉强的、被动的、不得不继续下去的意思。
但用“保持”多指正常的、不费力的关系，用“维持”则常指被动的或勉强的关系。维持还有维护支持的意思，如“暗中维持”、“多方维持”等。
