偏偏 vs. 偏

偏偏 vs.
piānpiān vs. piān

Both words are connecting adverbs used in the second clause of a complex sentence.

1. They indicate that the happening of something or some situation is opposite to what one expects. 偏偏 is placed in front of the subject, where 偏 cannot.

(1) 我大老远跑去找他,他却偏偏)不在家。
(2) 本来想周末搞个聚会,偏偏他们都有事不能来,只好作罢。

2. Both words can indicate that the subject acts deliberately against the objective situation.

(1) 老师规定这篇报告要写2000字以上,他偏偏)只写了一千字。
(2) 本来时间就很紧,偏偏我还迟到了,这下彻底来不及了。

3. To indicate the meaning of “alone,” only 偏偏 can be used.

(1) 我们准时到了,偏偏他一个人迟到。
(2) 这么多书,偏偏没有我要的那本。

这两个副词都用于表示转折的分句中,是关联副词。
1. 表示客观事件的发生或客观状况与愿望相反。其中,“偏偏”可以用在主语前,而“偏”不能。
2. 表示主观上故意与客观相违背。
3. 表示单单、单独,多用“偏偏”。
