凶 and 凶恶
xiōng and xiōng'è

1. Both 凶 and 凶恶 are adjectives meaning “fierce.” 凶 also means “murder, unfortunate, very severely, etc.”
(1) 刚才来要债的几个人看起来非常凶（凶恶）。
(2) 他家养了一只体形庞大的藏獒，看上去很凶（凶恶）。
(3) 为了这事，他俩最近闹得很凶。

凶 and 凶恶 are interchangeable in example(1) and (2), but not in example (3) because 凶 here means “to a high degree.”

2. 凶 is also a noun, meaning “misfortune, injury or murder,” and is mostly used in set phrases.
(4) 那个地方很危险，如果你们贸然前去，只怕会凶多吉少。
(5) 歹徒夜入民宅，行凶伤人的传闻闹得镇上人心惶惶。
(6) 旧时，有的算命人认为凌晨鸡鸣是凶兆。

1. “凶” 和 “凶恶” 都是形容词。 两个词都有行为，相貌可怖，丑陋的意思。 但“凶” 还有“杀害人的，” “不幸的，” “ 程度深” 等意思。
例（1）和（2）中的“凶” 和 “凶恶”可以互换，但例（3）中的“凶”表示程度深，不可以和“凶恶”互换。
