凶 and 凶恶 are interchangeable in example(1) and (2), but not in example (3) because 凶 here means “to a high degree.”

2. 凶 is also a noun, meaning “misfortune, injury or murder,” and is mostly used in set phrases.
(4) 那个地方很危险,如果你们贸然前去,只怕会多吉少。
(5) 歹徒夜入民宅,行伤人的传闻闹得镇上人心惶惶。
