严厉 and 厉害 yánlì and lìhài
Both 严厉 and 厉害 are adjectives. 厉害 has the meaning of “being hard to deal with, severe, fierce, of high degree, etc.” 严厉 has the meaning of “stern and severe with the emphasis on one’s attitude or measures taken.
(1) 老师严厉地批评了那些上课迟到的同学。 (2) 他是一位严厉的老师。 (3) 他的手段十分厉害。 (4) 她身体不舒服,头晕得厉害。 (5) 她厉害(严厉)得有些不近人情。
严厉 often takes 地 to function as an adverbial, 厉害 often takes 得 to function as complement.
“严厉”和“厉害”都是形容词。“厉害”有难以对付,难以忍受或剧烈、凶猛、程度深等意思。“严厉”是严肃而厉害的意思,但着重指对人的态度、手段不吻合。 “严厉”常加“地”做状语,“厉害”常加“得”做补语。
