只得 vs. 只好 zhǐdé vs. zhǐhǎo
Both 只得 and 只好 mean “to be obliged to because there is no other choice”. The two are usually interchangeable, and 只得 is more emphatic. (1) 那天下雨,我没有带伞,只得(只好)冒雨跑回家。 (2) 昨天我去找你,但是你不再,我只好(只得)在你桌上给你留了张字条。 (3) 那个恶少见自己不是我们的对手,只好(只得)灰溜溜地走了。
只好 can be placed either before or after the subject, while 只得 is usually used after the subject. (4) 他们都没时间,只好我一个人来了。
“只得”和“只好”都有“不得不”的意思,表示只能这样,没有别的选择。常常可以互换。用“只得”更强调不得已的色彩,语气重一些。“只好”可用于主语前或后,“只得”一般只用于主语之后。
