  1. 1. noun The Qidan; The Khitan; an ethnic people in ancient China who were a branch of the Eastern Hu inhabiting the valley of the Xar Murun river in the upper reaches of the Liaohe river. In the 10th century, Yelv A Baoji unified all the Khitan tribes and established the Kingdom of Khitan.
