家 vs. 家庭

Both words mean family and home.
(1) 那原本是一个美满的家庭（家）。

It is not common to find a case like the example above where either word can be used. 家 is colloquial, and 家庭 is more formal.
(2) 他家有一只很可爱的小狗。

家 can also mean “address, residence.”
(3) 他家住在城东。
(4) 她家附近有一个商场。

家 sometimes is used figuratively, e.g. 职工之家 (Workers’ Home, a place for recreational activities). When the address is specifically referred to (as when filling in a form), it is used, such as 家庭地址. There are also some customary collocations, e.g. 家庭关系, 家庭作业, 和睦家庭, etc.

家is also a measure word for household, store, factory, etc. e.g. 一家店铺, 一家工厂, 一家企业, 一家餐馆, 两家人, etc.

家 is also a suffix, meaning “a specialist”, e.g. 作家, 科学家, 画家, 文学家, etc.

这两个词都可以表示以婚姻和血统关系为基础的社会生活单位。
但像上例这种两个词可以通用的情况较少。“家”比较通俗，口语化，“家庭”则较正式，书面化。
“家”还可以表示住址、住地。“家”有时还有比喻的意思，如“职工之家”（文娱活动场所）。当特指地址（如填写表格）时，用“家庭地址”。“家庭”还有些习惯搭配，如“家庭关系”、“家庭作业”、“和睦家庭”等。
“家”也是量词，用于人家、店铺、工厂等，如“一家店铺”、“一家工厂”、“一家企业”、“一家餐馆”、“两家人”等。
“家”也可以是尾词，指从事某种社会活动或精通某种知识技能，并有一定知名度的人。如“作家”、“科学家”、“画家”、“文学家”等。
