抱歉 vs. 对不起 bàoqiàn vs. duìbuqǐ
Both 抱歉 and 对不起 are used for apologies. 抱歉 is an adjective and 对不起 is a verb phrase. The meaning of 对不起 is very concrete and it can have an object. It can be used directly to apologize. 抱歉 cannot have an object. (1) 抱歉(对不起),我迟到了。 (2) 他不小心踩到旁边的人的脚,于是马上说:“对不起(抱歉)。” (3) 对于这次的事情,我表示抱歉(对不起)。 (4) 让你受了这么多委屈,我觉得很对不起你。 (5) 不管怎么样你也不能做对不起国家的事情。
抱歉 can function as an adverbial, while 对不起 cannot. (6) 他抱歉地对大家说:“不好意思,让大家久等了。”
“抱歉”、“对不起”这两个词语都表示因为做错了事情,对别人有愧。前者是形容词,后者是是动词词组。但“对不起”词义较具体,可带宾语,可以直接用于对别人表示道歉;“抱歉”不能带宾语。“抱歉”可作状语,“对不起”不能。
