píngfán vs. píngcháng

Both words mean “ordinary or common,” but 平常 can be applied to human beings, things and everyday affairs, while 平凡 is mainly applied to human beings. 平凡, opposite to 伟大 has a sense of or the work fields such as “post,” “work,” “jobs,” “world,”; whereas 平常 is the opposite of 特殊. Both words can be reduplicated.

After substitution, the meaning changes. 平凡的人 means “a common person without any outstanding achievement.” 平常的人 means “an ordinary person just like anyone else.”

Both 平凡 and 平平凡凡 can be used as verbals, but 平常 cannot until being reduplicated to 平平常常. When applied to things other than people, 平常 is used instead of 平凡.

平常 also means “usually or ordinarily.”
