形式 vs. 形状
xíngshì vs. xíngzhuàng
Both 形式 and 形状 mean “ the appearance of something”, but they have different meanings and usages. 形式 means “ the form, shape, construction, etc”. It can be applied to both concrete and abstract things. 形状means “ the appearance” and is applied to concrete things. 形式and 形状in the following examples are not interchangeable.
(1) 教育的形式可以是多种多样的，不一定必须要在教室里上课。
(2) 你必须在月底之前向学校提供一份书面形式的材料。
(3) 婚姻并非爱情的唯一形式。
(4) 天空中的云朵有多种多样的形状，每时每刻都在变化。
(5) 这块木头的形状很特别，很适合做根雕。
(6) 风没有形状，也没有颜色，但是在孩子们的想象中却有了各种各样的形状和颜色。
名词“形式”、“形状”都表示事物的某种形态、样子，但词义和使用范围不同。“形式”指事物的外观、结构，表现事物的方式、手段等，可用于具体或抽象的事物。而“形状”指事物外表的样子，用于具体事物。下列各例中“形式”和“形状”是不能互换的。
