悲哀 vs. 悲痛
bēi'āi vs. bēitòng

Both of the adjectives mean "grieved". If the misfortune is serious, either word will do.
(1) 父亲去世了,家人都十分悲哀(<悲痛)。
(2) 他在飞机失事中遇难,大家都很悲哀悲痛)。

If it is some slight feeling of grief or disappointment over some unhappy things, only 悲哀 is used.
(3) 看到这些无知的行为,我感到很悲哀

这两个形容词都含有由于遭受不幸或不如意的事而伤心,难过的意思。遭到较大的不幸时,这两个词都可以用。
如果是遇到不如意的事或者是对某事产生失望、惋惜等,则多用“悲哀”。
