Thanksgiving 感恩节 gǎn'ēnjié
Thanksgiving is celebrated on second Monday in October in Canada and the fourth Thursday in November in the USA. The origins of Thanksgiving are disputed but the first attested thanksgiving was on September 8, 1565. The traditional "first Thanksgiving” is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. The pilgrims left England on the Mayflower in search of religious freedom after breaking away from the Church of England. They landed at Plymouth Rock on December 21, 1620. The pilgrims first winter was riddled with difficulties including starvation and lack of shelter. An Indian who had been to Europe as a slave and escaped back to America named Squanto taught the pilgrims how to farm corn, catch fish, and make other necessary items. With Squanto’s teachings the pilgrims had their first successful harvest in 1621. They then gathered Squanto and about 90 other Wampanoag Indians in a celebration of food and feasting. Thanksgiving is usually celebrated together with family, friends, and food. The food that is traditionally eaten turkey, along with ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, pumpkin pie, and cranberry sauce. In the USA there are numerous football games on Thanksgiving Day to watch after eating too much at dinner.
