懂 and 懂得
dǒng and dǒngde
Both verbs can mean "to understand, to be familiar with." 懂 is used either as the predicate or as a complement. 懂得 can only be the predicate.
(1) 你懂（懂得）这句话的意思吗？
Nǐ dǒng de zhè jù huà de yì sī mǎ?
Do you understand what this sentence means?
(2) 他把这个问题弄懂了。
Tā bǎ zhè gè wèn tí nòng dǒng le.
He got the problem figured out.
(3) 他看不懂中文。
Tā kàn bù dǒng zhōng wén.
He can't read Chinese.
(4) 有不明白的地方就要问，不要装懂。
Yǒu bù míng bái de dì fāng jiù yào wèn, bù yāo zhuāng dǒng.
Ask about what you don't understand instead of pretending you know it.
In example (1), 懂 is the main predicate, 懂得 can replace 懂 in this example. In example (2) and (3) 懂 is the complement. In example (4), 懂 is an object.
这两个动词都表示知道，熟悉懂常做谓语，也可以做补语懂得只做谓语。
例(1)中懂做谓语，例（2）和（3）中懂做补语，例（4）的懂做宾语。
