成长 and 生长
chéngzhǎng and shēngzhǎng

1. 生长 refers to the natural growth and maturity of an organism, usually a plant, but in general can also be used to refer to human beings and animals as well, e.g.
(1) 这棵树生长得很茂盛。
(2) 植物的生长需要充足的光照和水分。
(3) 孩子的生长和发育和周边环境有着密切的关系。

生长 also indicate the birth and growth of a person, and when used with people it carries a more abstract meaning (such as "a newly emerging force", "a reserve force", "a backbone", etc.), e.g.:
(4) 我从小就生长在这个小镇上。
(5) 仇恨力量在他的心里不断生长，最终成为了报复的利剑。

生长 also can be used metaphorically to indicate the development of an economy, science, technology, etc.:
(6) 在传统工业中，新技术生长得还不快。
(7) 这里市场经济还在生长发育的过程中。

2. 成长
1) 成长 indicates the growth and maturation of the human body. If 生长 and 成长 are used together, the former stresses growth while the latter stresses maturation
(1) 这些树苗将来会成长为一片森林。
(2) 孩子在成长过程中需要补充充足的营养。

2) 成长 can also indicate the development and maturity of a person’s character.
(3) 经过多年的部队生活，他终于成长为一个优秀的士兵。
(4) 在学校里，他的能力成长的很快。

1.生长表示生物体的自然长大、成熟，具体意义多指植物，泛指意义也包括人和动物。
“生长”还表示人的出生的长大，有时也表示较抽象意义的人群（如“新生力量”、“后备力量”、“骨干力量”等）的产生。
“生长”还可以用来比喻经济、科学技术等的发展。
2.成长（1） 表示动植物包括人的身体的长大和成熟。如“生长”和“成长”并用，前者侧重逐渐长大，后者侧重成熟。
（2）表示人或人群的性格、素质的发展成熟。
