míngmíng and míng

Both are conjunctive adverbs used in one clause to stress the truth of a fact, whereas the other clause points out a situation which appears to to go against the stated fact.
(1) 你明明（明）知道他生病了，却还要他干这么重的活儿。
(2) 你昨天明明就不在家，为什么要撒谎说你在？
(3) 这明明就是你的错，为什么要怪别人呢？

Only in example (1) are the two words interchangeable, because 明 usually appears only before "知" and "知道."

明明 can also be used in a rhetorical question to emphasize an assertion, implying “although it may not be so obvious" or “although somebody may doubt the truth..."
(4) 我不是明明告诉过你我不喜欢红色吗？

这连个关联副词的用法是，在一个分句中它们强调某事实的真实性，另一分句则指出似乎与真实性相对的情况。
以上只有例(1)可以互换，因为“明”一般只用于“知”、“知道”之前。
“明明”还可以用在反问句中，加强确认的语气，隐含“虽然表面上不是如此”的意思。“明”不能这样用。
