曾 and 曾经 céng and céngjīng
Both words indicate that something once happened before. 曾 is more literary than 曾经. (1) 他曾经(曾)在这里学习和生活了三年。 (2) 这里曾经(曾)是一片荒凉。
曾 can be used in 不曾, 未曾, 何曾, 似曾, etc. 曾经 cannot be used in these phrases. (3) 我只是听说过,但从来不曾见过他。 (4) 这件事他未曾听过。 (5) 他何曾吃过这么好吃的东西?
曾 can be used in idiomatic phrases such as 似曾相识 (seem to have met before). The negative form of 曾经 is not 不曾经, but 不曾 or 未曾.
这两个词都表示以前有过(一般已完成)某事或情况。“曾”较书面化。 “曾”可说“不曾”、“未曾”、“何曾”“似曾”等,“曾经”不能这样搭配。 “曾”可构成“似曾相识”等成语。 “曾经”的否定式不是“不曾经”,而是“不曾”,“未曾”。
