用途 and 用处
yòngtú and yòngchu
用途 and 用处 both mean "the scope of use", but 用途 is mostly used in formal writing, and can only be used in reference to inanimate objects, while 用处 is used in everyday language and can refer both to inanimate objects and human beings.
When applied to inanimate objects, the two words are interchangeable but carry different tones.
(1) 盐有很多种用途（用处）。
(2) 因为这两种工具的用途（用处）不同，所以材料也不同。
(3) 这种材料的用途（用处）很广泛。
When applied to human beings, only 用处 can be used, and it is usually simplified into 用. 有用的人is used to praise a person who is capable and can be of use to other people or society.
(4) 我只是希望你能够做一个对社会有用的人。
(5) 你也太没用了吧！这么点事情都搞不定！
“用途”和“用处”都表示应用的范围，但“用途”多用于书面语，且一般只用于物，而“用处”多用于口语，可用于物也可用于人。
当用于物时，可互换使用，但语体风格不同。
当用于人时，只能用“用处”，并常简化成“用”。“有用的人”是赞美一个人有作为、能干，能做对别人、对社会有用的事情。
