次 and 遍

Both are verbal measure words to indicate “the repetition of an action.” 遍 also stresses the course of the action.

1. 次 can be applied to the formal reoccurrence of major events, e.g. 第一次全国代表大会 (the First National People’s Congress), 第二次国内革命战争 (the Second Revolutionary Civil War), 第三次旅行 (the third tour). 遍 cannot be used in this way.

2. 次 can be used in phrases, e.g. 初次(first time), 再次 (second time), 前次 (last time), etc. 遍 cannot be used for such phrases.

3. Both words can be qualified by a numeral preceded with 第 (used before numerals to form ordinal numbers), 前, 后, 最后, etc.:一次, 两次, 第一次, 前一次, 后一次, 最后一次, etc., and 一遍, 两遍, 第三遍, 前一遍, 后一遍, 最后一遍, etc. 二遍 is rarely used but 二次 can be used, e.g. 二次进京 (visiting the capital again).

4. 次 is used more often. 遍 stresses a course from the beginning to end and so it is applied to actions like 读, 写, 唱, 说, 画, etc. which involve a course.
(1) 他来过我家两次。
(2) 我不会做这道题，他就把这题的要领给我从头到尾讲了一遍。
(3) 这篇文章他才读了三遍，然后就背下来了。

5.Some action feature repetition as well as duration, so either 次 or 遍 can be used.
(1) 这幅画再让我看一遍吧。
(2) 这件事你说了很多遍了。

Both words can be reduplicated.
(3) 他一次次失败，又一次次从失败中站起来。
(4) 经过一遍遍的练习，他终于熟练弹奏这首曲子了。

这两个词都是动量词。用于反复出现的事物。“遍”同事强调从开始到结束的过程。
1.“次”可用于正式的、反复出现的大事，如“第一次全国代表大会”、“第二次国内革命战争”、“第三次旅行”等。“遍”没有以上的用法。
2.“次”可说“初次”、“再次”、“前次”；“遍”则不能这样搭配。
3.两个词都可受数词修饰，前面还可以加“第”、“前”、“后”等。如“一次”、“两次”、“第一次”、“前一次”、“后一次”、“最后一次”等，以及“一遍”、“两遍”、“第三遍”、“前一遍”、“后一遍”、“最后一遍”等。但是“二遍”很少用，“二次”则可以用，如“二次进京”。
4.“次”用得较广较多，“遍”因表示一个人从始至终的历程，一般用于“读”、“写”、“唱”、“说”、“画”等具有历程性的动作。
5.有时动作的重复性与历程性兼而有之，用“次”或“遍”均可。
两个词都可以重叠。
