长期, 长久 and 长远

长期, 长久 and 长远
chángqī, chángjiǔ and chángyuǎn

The three words all mean “a long time”, but 长期 is a non-predicate adjective, while 长久 and 长远 are ordinary adjectives.

1. 长期 means “a long period of time”, and is usually used as an attributive or adverbial:
(1) 他想找一个长期的工作。
(2) 这间房子长期没有人住。
(3) 有一个问题长期困扰着她。

Sometimes it is used in the pattern 是……的:
(4) 改革的任务是长期的。
(5) 这项贷款是长期的。

2. 长久 means “a long time”, usually with a subjective flavor. It can be used as an attributive, adverbial, complement or predicate:
(1) 这个工作需要有一个长久的计划。
(2) 她的身影长久地浮现在我脑海当中。
(3) 我们的关系不可能维持得很长久
(4) 这样的情况会长久吗?

长久 can take the place of 长期 in example (1), (2), (3), but 长期 sounds more literary and is not used very often. In example (1), 长久 can be replaced by 长期。

长期 and 长久 can have 以来 (since) after them.
(5) 长期长久)以来,这里一直没有使用太阳能。
(6)长期长久)以来,他一直从事研究工作。

3. 长远 means “long range or long term”, and is used as an attributive, adverbial, complement and predicate.
(1) 制定计划时应该要有长远打算。
(2) 这种优良的传统要长远地保持下去。
(3) 她考虑问题很长远
(4) 你的路还很长远

In examples (1) and (2), either 长期 or 长久 can be used. Since 长久 does not stress the span of time, it cannot be used in examples (3) and (4).

长远 can be said as 从长远…… and is generally used as an adverbial:
