A preposition is used before an object, noun, pronoun or a phrase, to form a phrase that describes a place, position, direction, method, time, object, aim, or the passive voice. Prepositional phrases can be used as adverbial adjuncts, objects, attributives, or compliments.

1. "除了" chúle means "there is something else" and is often followed by "还" hái, "也" yě, etc.
(1) 他这次旅行除了去了西藏还去了云南。
(2) 除了我, 小赵和小林也会弹钢琴。

2. It means the exclusion of the aforementioned person or things.
(1) 这件事除了他, 大家都不知道。
(2) 除了大张, 我们都吃过饭了。
