Shanghai; an eastern Chinese city at the mouth of the Yangtze River, also known as 沪(hù), is mainland China's economic powerhouse and largest city. The 1842 Treaty of Nanjing ended the First Opium War and opened up Shanghai to trade with the West. Foreign investment collapsed after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. However, in 1992 foreign direct investment was encouraged, and Shanghai's economy has since been growing at an amazing pace.
